How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle
Core material
Most modern paddles use either a polymer core or a newer foam core. Polymer cores tend to feel softer and more forgiving, which suits control-oriented players and beginners. Foam cores generally offer a longer "dwell time" — the ball stays on the face a fraction longer — which can add both power and spin for players with a faster swing.
Shape & length
Standard shapes offer the largest, most forgiving sweet spot — a good default for new players. Elongated shapes trade some width for extra reach and pop, which better-suited to players who already have consistent contact. Hybrid shapes split the difference.
Weight & swing feel
Lighter paddles are quicker to react with at the net and easier on the arm over a long session, while heavier paddles carry more natural power on drives. If you're unsure, a mid-weight paddle is the safest starting point — you can always switch things up once you know your playstyle.
Surface texture & spin
Textured "grit" surfaces help the paddle face grab the ball for extra spin on serves and dinks. If spin is a priority for your game, look for paddles that specifically call out a textured or raw carbon fiber face.
